Smart Money / Dumb Money Confidence
Education only · our voice · free public data
Definition
A pair of composite confidence models (0-100%) contrasting historically better-timed 'smart money' behavior with historically poorly-timed 'dumb money' behavior; the spread between them is a contrarian sentiment gauge. (Our own educational description of a SentimenTrader-style composite.)
How to read it
These composites blend several positioning and options-based inputs into two confidence readings on a 0-100% scale. 'Smart money' proxies for cohorts that have historically been right at turning points; 'dumb money' proxies for cohorts that have historically chased and been wrong at extremes. Read contrarily: when dumb-money confidence is very high and smart-money confidence very low (a wide negative spread), the crowd is euphoric and risk is elevated; when the reverse occurs (dumb money fearful, smart money confident), a bottom may be forming. The spread (smart minus dumb) is the headline signal, and only its extremes carry strong information — the middle of the range is noise. This is a generic, educational description of how such models are read, not a proprietary formula.
How practitioners use it
Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.
Less common professional uses
Extremes-only discipline: the model earns its keep at the tails; acting on modest spreads produces whipsaws in trending markets. In powerful trends, dumb-money confidence can stay pinned near highs for weeks — 'overbought sentiment' is not a short signal without price/breadth confirmation and a downturn in the reading. The most reliable setup is a spread extreme that then reverses (e.g., dumb money rolling down from euphoria), not the extreme reading itself. Percentile-frame both series; a raw 80% means different things across regimes, so calibrate against the indicator's own history.
