QQE (Quantitative Qualitative Estimation)

Definition
QQE is a smoothed-RSI system that applies a Wilder's-smoothed RSI plus an ATR-based volatility trailing band to filter noise and produce clearer momentum crossovers. 'QQE MOD' is a popular variant that also overlays a Bollinger-style band on the smoothed RSI.
How to read it
The fast line is a smoothed RSI; the slow line is a trailing 'RSI-ATR' band. A crossover of the fast line above the slow band signals bullish momentum; below signals bearish. The QQE MOD 'state' typically renders as a colored regime: one color when smoothed RSI is above its threshold band (momentum on/bullish), another when below (momentum off/bearish). Zero/midline references correspond to the 50 level of the underlying RSI.
How practitioners use it
Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.
Less common professional uses
Because it double-smooths RSI, QQE lags more than raw RSI; in fast reversals the state flips late - it is better as a confirmation/filter than a precise trigger. In choppy, low-volatility ranges the ATR band tightens and the fast line whipsaws across it repeatedly; pair with a volatility/trend gate (ADX or Bandwidth) to suppress false flips. The two QQE MOD sub-signals (fast-cross vs. band-color) can disagree; treating agreement of both as the higher-conviction condition filters marginal signals.
