News vs Technical Classification
Education only · our voice · free public data
Definition
A tag distinguishing whether a price move is driven by a fundamental catalyst (news) or by chart-based/positioning dynamics (technical) — the two behave very differently afterward.
How to read it
News-driven moves respond to new information (earnings, guidance, macro data, M&A) and tend to reprice to a new level that can hold; technical moves arise from positioning, support/resistance, and flow, and are more prone to mean-revert. Classifying the driver sets expectations: a technical break with no news is more likely to fade or need retest confirmation, while a news gap on heavy volume more often establishes a durable new range. The tag frames how much to trust follow-through.
How practitioners use it
Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.
Less common professional uses
Fade-vs-follow depends on positioning: a news beat into already-crowded long positioning ('good news, sells off') is a classic exhaustion tell that a naive news tag would misread as bullish. Technical moves near option-heavy strikes can be dealer-hedging (gamma) artifacts that reverse after expiry — classify these as mechanical, not directional. Distinguish first-order news (the print) from second-order (the revision cycle) — durable trends often come from the guidance/estimate-revision path that follows the headline, not the gap itself.
