NAAIM Exposure Index

Education only · our voice · free public data

Definition

Weekly survey of the National Association of Active Investment Managers reporting members' average equity exposure, from net short (below 0) to leveraged long (above 100), used as a real-money positioning gauge for tactical managers.

How to read it

Unlike opinion surveys, NAAIM asks active managers what they are actually doing with client equity exposure. Readings run roughly from -200 (leveraged short) through 0 (flat) to 100 (fully long) and above 100 (leveraged long). High readings mean managers are all-in (crowded long, contrarian caution); very low or negative readings mean defensive positioning (potential washout). It is a coincident-to-slightly-leading condition, not a trigger, and it reflects one self-selected cohort of tactical managers.

How practitioners use it

Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.

Less common professional uses

A CFTC TFF NAAIM-analog can be reconstructed for free from the Asset-Manager net position in equity-index futures, giving a positioning proxy without a survey subscription; treat it as an analog, not an identical series. Dispersion matters: a mean of 55 with responses clustered tightly is a different regime than a mean of 55 spanning -100 to +200, where managers strongly disagree. NAAIM is a small, self-selected panel; single-week spikes can be noise, so smooth with a short moving average before drawing positioning conclusions. Beware confirmation bias between real-money (NAAIM) and opinion (AAII, Investors Intelligence) series: they measure different things and only a genuine cross-population agreement strengthens a positioning read. Survey timing (responses collected mid-week, published Thursday) introduces a short lag versus live tape.
