Days to Expiration (DTE) / Tenor

Education only · our voice · free public data

Definition

The number of calendar days remaining until an option expires; tenor is the same concept expressed as the option's lifespan. DTE governs time value, the rate of theta decay, and how sharply gamma and vega behave near expiry.

How to read it

DTE is the clock on every option. Extrinsic (time) value decays toward zero as DTE -> 0, but not linearly: theta for ATM options accelerates in the final weeks (roughly proportional to 1/sqrt(DTE)), while gamma spikes so P&L becomes hyper-sensitive to the underlying near expiry. Longer tenors are more vega-sensitive (more exposure to IV changes) and cost more premium; shorter tenors are more gamma/theta-driven. Choosing DTE is choosing your exposure mix: sell short-DTE to harvest fast theta (at high gamma risk), buy longer-DTE for durable directional or vega exposure.

How practitioners use it

Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.

Less common professional uses

ATM extrinsic value scales roughly with sqrt(DTE) (from BSM: ~0.4 x S x sigma x sqrt(T)), so time value does NOT halve when you halve the days - it falls by only ~29%; the intuition that 'half the time = half the premium' is wrong and mis-sizes calendar/roll decisions. Gamma and theta are two sides of the same coin and both blow up as DTE -> 0: near expiry a tiny underlying move flips an ATM option's delta from ~0 to ~1, so 0DTE short positions carry enormous realized-gamma risk that the small premium and high POP disguise - the 0DTE 'income' trade is selling convexity cheaply. Vega term structure means DTE selection is a bet on WHICH part of the vol curve you want: an event (earnings, Fed) inside a short tenor but not a longer one lets calendars isolate event vol, and IV crush post-event hits the near leg far more than the far leg.
